"Oral motor skills are essential for eating, feeding, talking, and regulating ourselves!

Here are my top activity suggestions for addressing oral aversions, hyper or hypo sensitivities, “waking up” the gustatory system, and helping to strengthening facial tone—while having fun!

My favorite part of these activities is that many of these items are easy to find, cost-effective, or simple household items—no fancy equipment needed here!" - Sarah ✨

"Here we have some of my go-to sensory activities/toys to help children build sensory tolerance, explore the world with their hands, receive adequate sensory input to help them regulate themselves, and to simply have fun ✨🖍️

Everyone, from children to adults, respond better to/needs certain types of input to help them function optimally across their environments — so no worries if some of these aren’t meeting the needs of your child — trial and error is your friend. Mix and match, grade the amount of input you’re giving, and be as creative as you’d like!" - Sarah

Child’s Mental Health

"We often have a difficult time viewing a child as more than a child. Like you and I, they have emotions and feelings that affect their everyday life, sensory thresholds, and needs that must be met so they can engage optimally in all of their environments. This is why it is so important to nurture a child’s mental health so they can feel supported, have a sense of stability, and be able to persevere through difficult situations. Here are five of the best ways you can provide these types of experiences." - Sarah Stevens @theotmethod 🌸

Bilateral Coordination

Most of us don't think too much when we are using both sides of our body to complete a task. But for some individuals, difficulty in coordinating both sides of their body can lead to challenges in the simple day-to-day activities, such as dressing 👚 tying shoes 👟 cutting ✂ throwing 🏈 riding a bike 🚲 - just to name a few.

Bilateral coordination is definitely an important skill for kids to develop. So, if your child is lagging in this skill, please consult with a pediatrician or occupational therapist as soon as you can.

Fun hand strengthening ideas!

Helping our kids build and develop the small muscles of their hands so they can be successful with their daily routines both at home and while at school or outside is very important, which is why our therapist, Andrea Doumar @ot_room shares with you a few fun hand strengthening ideas! 🖐🏼

Some of the activities you could do include:

1️⃣ Theraputty or Playdough: You can roll it, knead it, turn it into a pancake. I love to hide items, such as beads or coins inside to have the students try to find them.

2️⃣ Rip Paper and Crumble: Work on using two hands together to rip paper. The thicker the paper the harder to rip! Take those ripped pieces and roll them into a ball so you can use those materials to create a craft.

3️⃣ Cookie Cutters: Use cookie cutters with the playdough, or take small elastic bands and try to have students stretch them around the cookie cutter

Do you want more ideas? Well, great news! We have got more! 🎊 Just head over to our website to see the full blog where Andrea shares a whole list of fun ideas! funfactorysensorygyms.com 🌐

Self Care Development Checklist

Self-care skills are the everyday activities performed in order to be ready to participate in life activities (including dressing, eating, cleaning teeth and more). While parents often assist young children in the activities, it is expected that children will develop independence in these areas as they mature. Self-care can help children of all ages become more self-aware and reflective about their physical and emotional needs. Review the skills displayed by the child up to their current age using our chart. If you discover skills that have not been met below their current age, get professional assistance from experts.
